Ranging from Central America into the Amazon, the Blue-Headed Pionus is a medium parrot weighing 220-280 grams and living 25-40 years. Pionus parrots are treasured as the calm, quiet middle ground between excitable conures and demanding Amazons, offering affectionate but undemanding companionship with a distinctive wheezing sound when excited that is entirely normal. House them in a roomy cage of at least 65cm width with perches, toys, and foraging opportunities. Feed a low-fat diet of formulated pellets, vegetables, and greens, since pionus are prone to obesity and are sensitive to certain airborne irritants that can cause respiratory trouble, so avoid smoke, aerosols, and fumes. These reserved birds appreciate gentle daily interaction without constant handling and can be shy at first.
