The Blue Leg or Dwarf Blue Leg Hermit Crab (Clibanarius tricolor) comes from the Caribbean and stays small, under 2 cm. Its vivid blue legs with black and orange banding make it as decorative as it is useful, and it spends its days scavenging hair algae, cyanobacteria, and uneaten food from rock and sand. Add to any reef tank at 24-26C, salinity 1.024-1.026, pH 8.1-8.4, acclimating slowly since it is copper-sensitive. Provide an assortment of empty snail shells of varying sizes, as hermits fight over and switch shells as they grow, and may kill snails for their shells if none are available. It is reef-safe and peaceful, and a small group makes an efficient, affordable janitorial team.
