Clown killifish, also called banded panchax, are tiny surface-dwelling fish from the coastal forest streams of West Africa, perfectly suited to a heavily planted nano aquarium with floating plants and calm water. They prefer soft, acidic conditions around 73-79F and a tightly covered tank, since these agile fish are accomplished jumpers that will leap through the smallest gaps. Their upturned mouths are built for taking food from the surface, so offer small floating or slow-sinking foods such as micro pellets, baby brine shrimp, fruit flies, and microworms. Keep them in a small group with more females than males to temper the harmless sparring between males, who display their rocket-shaped tails when competing. Peaceful and undemanding once settled, they are a jewel of dedicated nano and shrimp-tank setups but too small for boisterous communities.
