The clown loach (Chromobotia macracanthus) is a large, social loach from the rivers of Sumatra and Borneo in Indonesia. Often sold small, it grows to 20–30 cm and is remarkably long-lived, commonly reaching 10–20 years and sometimes far more. Its bold orange body crossed by three black bars makes it instantly recognisable. Because of their eventual size and need for company, clown loaches must be kept in groups of five or more in a large tank of 450 litres or more at a warm 25–30°C with a pH of 6.0–7.5. Provide strong filtration and current, driftwood, rocks and caves for the hiding and playing they love. They are active, intelligent and even make audible clicking sounds when content. Omnivores that relish sinking pellets, vegetables and frozen or live foods, they are famous for eating pest snails. Deeply social, isolated individuals languish. As scaleless fish they are highly prone to ich and sensitive to medications, so quarantine new arrivals, treat gently and maintain warm, clean, well-oxygenated water to keep these long-lived clowns thriving.
