The Clumber Spaniel is the calmest and most laid-back of the spaniels, a gentle, affectionate dog that bonds closely with its family and is generally friendly, if a little reserved, with strangers. Dignified and quietly devoted, Clumbers are patient with children and get along well with other pets. They have a stubborn streak but are sweet-natured and enjoy pleasant company over frantic activity. This is a low-to-moderate energy breed that still needs regular daily walks and gentle play to stay fit and prevent weight gain, to which it is very prone. Clumbers enjoy sniffing, retrieving and relaxed field work, but they are not built for hard running or heat. Training should be patient and reward-based; they are food-motivated and willing but not fast-paced, so keep sessions calm and positive. The dense white coat sheds significantly and needs brushing several times a week, with attention to the ears and facial folds to prevent infection. As a heavy, deep-bodied breed, Clumbers are prone to hip dysplasia, eye conditions such as entropion, ear infections and obesity, so measured feeding is essential. Kept lean and loved, the Clumber is a devoted, easygoing housemate.
