The convict cichlid (Amatitlania nigrofasciata) is a small Central American cichlid from the streams and lakes running from Guatemala through Honduras to Costa Rica and Panama. It grows to about 8–13 cm and lives 8–10 years. Its black vertical bars over a pale body earned it both its 'convict' and 'zebra cichlid' names. Convicts are hardy and undemanding, needing a tank of 150 litres or more at 22–28°C with a pH of 6.5–8.0. Provide caves, rocks and a diggable substrate; they will uproot plants and rearrange decor with gusto. They are tolerant of a wide range of conditions, which is part of why they are so widely kept. Omnivores with a big appetite, they eat cichlid pellets, vegetables and meaty frozen foods. Their fame rests on their breeding: a pair spawns readily and defends its fry with astonishing courage, attacking fish many times their size, so house them alone or only with equally robust cichlids. Hardy overall, their main risks are ich, hole-in-the-head and obesity, all prevented by clean water and a measured, varied diet.
