The Dogue de Bordeaux is a calm, affectionate colossus that bonds intensely with its family and can be aloof or wary with strangers. Despite the imposing exterior, these dogs are sensitive souls who wilt under harsh handling and thrive on gentle, confident leadership. They are patient with children they know but must always be supervised given their sheer size and strength. Exercise needs are moderate: a couple of relaxed daily walks keep a Bordeaux fit without overheating. Their short muzzle makes them intolerant of heat and hard exertion, so avoid midday summer activity. Early, positive socialization and consistent training are essential — a headstrong 60-kilo dog that ignores you is a genuine problem, so start young. Grooming is refreshingly simple: a weekly wipe-down and attention to the facial wrinkles, which must be cleaned and dried to prevent infection. Sadly the breed is one of the shortest-lived of all dogs, prone to heart disease, hip dysplasia, bloat and breathing issues. Feed measured meals, avoid exercise around feeding, and keep a trusted vet close.
