The Emperor Scorpion (Pandinus imperator) is one of the largest scorpions in the world, a glossy black species from the rainforests of West Africa reaching up to 20 cm including the tail. Like all scorpions it fluoresces an eerie blue-green under UV light, and despite its dramatic pincers and sting it is famously docile, with venom roughly comparable to a bee sting. Emperors are display-and-observe pets rather than handling animals; while calm, any scorpion can pinch or sting, so they are best watched, not held. They are relatively long-lived for an invertebrate at 6-8 years, and captive-bred animals are strongly preferred over wild-caught for conservation and health reasons. House one in a warm, humid terrarium of at least 40 litres with several centimetres of moist substrate for burrowing, a hide such as cork bark, and a shallow water dish, kept around 25-28 C with high humidity. Feed appropriately sized insects such as crickets, roaches and the occasional mealworm, removing uneaten prey. Watch humidity carefully — too dry causes problems with moulting, when the scorpion is soft and vulnerable and must not be disturbed — and avoid loose substrate that can cause injury after a fall.
