The Fire-bellied Toad (genus Bombina, usually the Oriental B. orientalis) is a small, semi-aquatic amphibian from Asia and Europe, mottled green above for camouflage and vivid red-orange and black beneath. When threatened it arches to flash that belly, a warning of the mild toxins in its skin. It reaches about 5 cm and lives 10-15 years. Unlike many amphibians, fire-bellied toads are active by day, sociable and comfortable in small groups, which makes them lively and rewarding to watch. Because of their skin secretions they should be handled as little as possible and always with clean, wet hands, with thorough hand-washing afterward. Keep a group in a semi-aquatic setup — a terrarium split between shallow, dechlorinated water and a land area with plants and hides — at a moderate 21-24 C, cooler than tropical species. Feed a varied diet of appropriately sized crickets, and other insects, dusted with calcium and vitamin supplements to prevent metabolic bone disease. Keep the water clean and well-filtered since they spend much of their time in it, and watch for skin infections, bloating and weight; a good group of fire-bellies is one of the most entertaining beginner amphibians.
