Land hermit crabs are wrongly sold as cheap, throwaway pets, but they are social, long-lived animals that can reach fifteen years or more with proper care — and they die slowly when kept badly. They are colony creatures and should be kept in groups of at least two or three, in a warm, humid 'crabitat': temperatures around 24–27°C and humidity of 70–80%, because hermit crabs breathe through modified gills and dry air suffocates them over time. The enclosure needs deep substrate — several times the largest crab's height — of damp sand or coconut fibre so they can bury completely to moult, which they do underground over days or weeks and must never be disturbed during. Provide two water dishes, one dechlorinated fresh and one marine salt water, plus climbing branches and, crucially, a selection of spare shells slightly larger than the ones they wear, since a crab with no upgrade available may fight or be left exposed. Feed a varied diet of fruit, vegetables and commercial crab food, and avoid painted or metal shells and cedar/pine substrates, which are toxic. Newly bought crabs often go through stressful settling, so patience, stable humidity and a clean tank are what turn a 'starter pet' into a thriving decade-long companion.
