The German blue ram (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi) is a dwarf cichlid from the Orinoco River basin savannahs (llanos) of Venezuela and Colombia. It reaches only about 5 cm and, unusually for a cichlid, is peaceful; sadly it is short-lived at just 2–3 years, partly due to intensive breeding. Its electric-blue speckling over gold and red makes it a living jewel. Rams are warmth-loving and demand a mature, stable tank of 75 litres or more at a warm 27–30°C, with soft, acidic water of pH 5.0–7.0. Provide gentle filtration, fine substrate, plants and flat stones or caves for spawning. A bonded pair will defend a small territory but rarely troubles other fish. They are omnivores leaning carnivorous, taking quality micro-pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp and daphnia. Devoted parents, a pair will guard eggs and shepherd their fry together. Their delicacy is real: sensitive to nitrate, ammonia and cool or unstable water, they are prone to ich and hexamita, so pristine, warm, soft water is essential to keep them thriving.
