The Hyacinth Macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus) is the world's largest flying parrot, reaching a full metre from beak to tail-tip, and lives in the palm savannahs and wetlands of central South America. Deep cobalt blue with vivid yellow eye-rings, it weighs 1.2-1.7 kg and can live 50-60 years, easily outliving its owner. Despite a beak powerful enough to crush hard palm nuts, the species is famously affectionate and playful, earning the name gentle giant. That size and intelligence demand serious commitment: a hyacinth needs an enormous, chew-proof enclosure or dedicated bird room, hours of interaction, and enrichment strong enough to survive that beak. Their specialised diet is built around high-fat palm nuts and macadamias alongside pellets, vegetables and measured fruit — one of the few parrots that genuinely needs more fat than most. Endangered in the wild and expensive to keep, they require an avian vet experienced with large macaws; respiratory infections, liver and kidney strain from poor diet, and plucking from boredom are the main health concerns for this magnificent, high-maintenance bird.
