Native to the Indian subcontinent, the Indian Ringneck is a small parrot weighing 110-140 grams with a lifespan of 25-35 years and an elegant tail that adds considerably to its length. Renowned for crisp, articulate speech, these birds are highly intelligent but can be somewhat independent and prone to a hormonal 'bluffing' phase during adolescence that requires patient handling. Because of their long tails, they need a tall, wide cage of at least 60cm with horizontal space to move. Provide formulated pellets supplemented with vegetables, greens, sprouted seeds, and some fruit. Consistent daily interaction is essential to keep them tame, as Ringnecks can revert to skittishness if handling lapses. They are moderately loud with a distinctive ringing call, benefit greatly from training and foraging enrichment, and reward committed owners with an impressive vocabulary and clever antics.
