The Jenday Conure (Aratinga jandaya) is a mid-sized Aratinga native to the woodlands of northeastern Brazil, closely related to the sun conure and sharing its flame-coloured head and body with a green mantle and wings. Adults weigh 120-140 g and can live 20-30 years, so adopting one is a multi-decade commitment. Like all Aratinga conures they are loud, confident and intensely social, treating their human as a flock member to be shadowed, groomed and shrieked at with joy. They thrive on interaction, learn simple words and tricks, and can turn nippy or plucky if isolated — a lone, unstimulated Jenday is an unhappy one. Build the diet on quality pellets plus fresh vegetables, sprouts and modest fruit, steering clear of high-fat seed mixes that cause obesity and strain the kidneys. Give a large cage, plenty of supervised out-time and a steady supply of chewable, foraging and puzzle toys; a wide, gentle daily routine keeps this bright, boisterous bird balanced and healthy for life.
