The Lilac-crowned Amazon (Amazona finschi) is endemic to the Pacific slope of Mexico and is endangered in the wild. Among Amazons it is the quiet, gentle one: smaller at 310 to 370 grams, softer-voiced, more retiring, and much less prone to the aggressive hormonal displays that define the yellow-headed species. Owners who want an Amazon's intelligence and lifespan without an Amazon's drama tend to end up here. That gentleness cuts both ways. Lilac-crowns are sensitive birds that startle easily and can be shy with strangers and slow to trust a new home, so they need patient, low-pressure socialisation rather than forced handling. They are moderate talkers with a soft voice. They bond deeply, often to one person, and they do not tolerate being ignored for days at a time; loneliness in this species shows up as feather plucking more readily than as screaming. Practical care is standard for an Amazon: a large cage, several hours of supervised time out, hardwood to chew and foraging work to do. Feed a pellet base with abundant vegetables and dark greens, keeping seeds, nuts and fruit to small occasional portions, since obesity and atherosclerosis are the classic Amazon killers. Provide bathing opportunities, keep the air clean of non-stick fumes, aerosols and smoke, weigh the bird monthly and arrange an annual avian vet check. Expect a devoted companion for forty to sixty years.
