The lovebird packs a huge, bold personality into a tiny body — feisty, energetic and endlessly busy, it shreds paper into nesting confetti and defends its space like a little knight. Despite the romantic name, a single well-socialised lovebird kept with daily human attention does perfectly well; the old belief that a lone bird will die of loneliness is a myth. A pair will bond strongly to each other, which is lovely but can make them less interested in you. Either way they need a roomy cage, lots of chewable toys and foraging, and out-of-cage exercise. As with all parrots, feed mostly pellets and fresh vegetables, not an all-seed diet, which brings obesity. Lovebirds can be nippy and territorial, especially around their cage, so consistent, gentle handling keeps them tame. Hens are prone to chronic egg-laying and egg binding, so avoid nesting triggers, and provide calcium. Their small lungs are highly sensitive to non-stick fumes, aerosols and smoke, which are quickly fatal. Watch for feather plucking (often boredom-driven), respiratory disease and self-mutilation, give them stimulation and a good diet, and a lovebird will be a vivid, devoted companion for ten to fifteen years.
