The Keeshond is a smiling, plush Dutch spitz — once the companion and watchdog of canal barges — with distinctive 'spectacle' markings and a personality built entirely around people. Friendly, lively, affectionate and highly social, it is a true family dog that wants to be in the middle of everything and does not do well left alone or isolated in a yard; loneliness makes it anxious and barky. Bright and eager to please, it is one of the easier spitz breeds to train with positive methods, though it will use its voice as an alert watchdog. Moderately active, it enjoys daily walks, play and games. The thick double coat sheds heavily and 'blows' seasonally, needing brushing a few times a week (and daily during moults) to prevent matting. Health-wise, buy from a breeder who screens hips and hearts, and be aware of the breed's tendencies: hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, epilepsy, heart disease, and a hormonal condition (hyperparathyroidism) that has a DNA test. Give a Keeshond plenty of company, exercise, training and grooming, keep up preventive care, and this cheerful, devoted 'people-dog' will be a wonderful family companion for twelve to fifteen years.
