The Caribbean or purple pincher hermit crab (Coenobita clypeatus) comes from coastal tropical regions and, despite its reputation as a throwaway pet, can live 10-20 years or more with proper care. These highly social crabs should be kept in groups and given a selection of empty shells slightly larger than their current one so they can upgrade as they grow. House them in a humid glass tank at 24-28C with 70-80 percent humidity and deep sand at least twice the crab's height for burrowing during molts. Provide two water dishes, one fresh and one marine saltwater, both deep enough to submerge in. Feed a varied diet of fruit, vegetables, and protein with a calcium source. The single most important rule is never to disturb a crab that has buried itself to molt, which can take weeks; digging it up is often fatal. Handle gently and briefly, avoiding drops.
