Marlier's Julie (Julidochromis marlieri) is the largest of the julies at about 12 to 15 cm and comes from the rocky coasts of Lake Tanganyika. Its checkerboard grid of dark markings on a cream body is unique among cichlids, and like the rest of the genus it orients to rock rather than to gravity, moving along vertical faces and cave ceilings belly-up without concern. A bonded pair needs 120 litres or more at 24-27C, pH 8.0 to 9.0 in hard buffered water, with rock piled into deep narrow caves. Feed frozen cyclops, mysis, brine shrimp and a quality small pellet. Julies are monogamous and biparental, guarding eggs and fry inside a crevice together, and once a pair forms they can spawn for years. The practical catch is pair formation: two random adults often fight, so start with a group of five or six juveniles and let a pair sort itself out, then rehome the rest. Outside their small territory they are calm and undemanding, and they suit a Tanganyikan community with shell dwellers and mid-water shoals.
