Every Morgan descends from a single 18th-century stallion named Figure (later 'Justin Morgan' after his owner), whose stamp of compact strength, high head carriage and willing temperament proved so dominant it founded a breed. Morgans are affectionate, eager and people-loving, forming strong bonds and staying versatile across driving, dressage, western and trail work. Hardy and long-lived, they are easy to keep and quick to learn, which makes them wonderful family horses — but that same efficiency means they gain weight readily, so grazing and feed need managing to avoid obesity and laminitis. They enjoy having a job and a close relationship with their handler. The flowing mane and tail take a little more grooming than a plainer breed, and hoof, dental and vaccination routines are standard. Morgans are generally robust with few breed-specific diseases, though some lines carry a risk of a metabolic/muscle condition (PSSM) and, rarely, a foal-heart defect — a health-tested breeder and a sensible weight-managed diet keep them thriving well into old age.
