The neon dwarf rainbowfish, native to the Mamberamo River basin of West Papua, is a smaller and more manageable rainbow reaching around three inches, making it ideal for aquarists who want the group's dazzling iridescence without a very large tank. A 20 to 30 gallon planted aquarium suits a shoal, with open swimming space in front of the plants where their colors catch the light. They do best in groups of six or more in moderately hard, neutral-to-alkaline water around 74-80F. Active and peaceful, they mix well with tetras, rasboras, and other calm community fish. Feed a varied diet of flakes, micro pellets, and frozen or live foods like daphnia and brine shrimp to maintain vivid blue-and-red coloration. Bright lighting and morning sun encourage males to flicker and display for the females.
