The Newfoundland is a giant, sweet-natured water-rescue dog — a lifeguard in a bear suit, with webbed feet, a waterproof coat and a famously gentle, patient 'nanny dog' temperament that makes it wonderful with children. Calm and only moderately active as an adult, it enjoys walks and, above all, swimming, but puppies must not be over-exercised while their huge frames grow. It bonds deeply and wants to be with its family; it is a devoted companion, not an outdoor-only dog, and it does far better in cool climates than in heat. The thick double coat sheds heavily and needs brushing several times a week, and yes — expect drool and mopping up water. As a giant breed the Newfoundland has a short lifespan of around nine to ten years and real health risks: buy from a breeder who screens hips and hearts, since the breed is prone to hip and elbow dysplasia and heart disease (subvalvular aortic stenosis). Guard against bloat with measured meals and rest after eating, and watch for urinary stones. Feed a proper large-breed diet, keep it lean and cool, avoid over-exercising the growing puppy, and a Newfoundland will be a gentle, devoted giant for its precious years.
