The Phoenix Rasbora (Boraras merah) comes from the blackwater swamps of southern Borneo and reaches only about 1.5 to 2 cm, making it one of the smallest fish in the aquarium trade. Males are a deeper orange-red with a distinct dark blotch on the side; females are rounder and paler. Its wild habitat is extremely soft, acidic, tannin-heavy water over a bed of decomposing leaves. A group of ten or more works in a planted nano tank from 30 litres, at 24-28C with a pH of 4.5 to 7.0 and soft water, gentle filtration and plenty of fine-leaved plants and leaf litter. Food size is the practical challenge: its mouth is tiny, so it needs crushed micro-pellets, powdered fry food, live baby brine, microworms and small cyclops rather than standard flake. It is peaceful but easily outcompeted, so it must not share a tank with anything much larger, and it is a poor choice for a busy community. In a dedicated nano with shrimp it is exceptional.
