The Polish Lowland Sheepdog, known by the Polish acronym PON, is a shaggy medium herding dog documented in Poland since at least the sixteenth century. It nearly disappeared after the Second World War and was rebuilt from a handful of dogs by a Polish veterinarian, Danuta Hryniewicz, whose dog Smok is the ancestor of the modern breed. Its most recognisable feature is the long coat falling over the eyes, which the dog sees through perfectly well. The PON is intelligent, confident and famously good at remembering things, which is a mixed blessing: it learns commands fast and also learns exactly which rules it can get away with breaking. It needs consistent, interesting, reward-based training from puppyhood and firm boundaries, or it will happily manage the household itself. It is loyal and affectionate with its family, watchful and reserved with strangers, and it makes an alert and rather vocal watchdog. Exercise is around an hour daily plus mental work; the breed does well at herding, agility and obedience. The coat is the biggest practical commitment in this file: a thick double coat that reaches the ground and mats readily, needing thorough brushing several times a week and regular professional care, or a much shorter pet trim if that is unrealistic. Health screening should cover hips and eyes, since hip dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy occur, and the breed also has documented hypothyroidism and, in some lines, diabetes.
