The Pomsky is a cross between a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky, first produced around 2012. Because of the size difference the cross can only be made by artificial insemination, with the Husky as the mother, and this makes it a deliberate commercial breeding project rather than something that occurs naturally. Buyers should be aware that the cross is unregulated and that quality of breeding varies enormously. The most important practical point is unpredictability. A first-generation Pomsky can inherit any combination of the two very different parent breeds, so adult size ranges roughly from seven to fourteen kilograms and temperament ranges from a Pomeranian-like lap dog to a small Husky with high prey drive, an escape instinct and a strong independent streak. Photographs of blue-eyed husky-marked puppies do not predict the adult. Meet the parents and, if possible, adult dogs from the same breeder. Most Pomskies are lively, clever, playful and very vocal, with both parent breeds contributing to noise: Pomeranian barking and Husky howling. They need around an hour of daily exercise plus mental work, secure fencing, and training that accounts for possible stubbornness. The thick double coat sheds heavily and needs brushing several times a week. Health-wise, watch for the small-breed issues from the Pomeranian side, patellar luxation, dental disease and tracheal collapse, and the eye conditions documented in Siberian Huskies. Buy only from a breeder who health-tests both parents.
