The Scarlet Reef or Red Reef Hermit Crab (Paguristes cadenati) is a Caribbean species reaching about 2.5 cm, recognizable by its bright red legs and yellow eyestalks. It is a dedicated grazer of hair algae, cyanobacteria, and film algae and is calmer and less shell-aggressive than many hermits. Keep in any reef tank at 24-26C, salinity 1.024-1.026, pH 8.1-8.4, with slow acclimation and no copper. Offer spare empty shells so it can upgrade as it grows and to reduce the chance it bothers snails. It appreciates supplemental feeding of dried algae and leftover food when natural algae runs low. Reef-safe and peaceful, it coexists well with other cleanup crew members and makes an excellent low-maintenance janitor.
