The serpae tetra (Hyphessobrycon eques) is a deep-red characin from the Guaporé, Paraguay and Madeira river basins of central South America. It grows to about 4 cm and lives 5–7 years. Its blood-red body, dark shoulder blotch and black-tipped fins make it one of the more striking small tetras. Serpaes are active shoalers for a tank of 75 litres or more and must be kept in groups of six or more — ideally more — to diffuse their aggression. Keep them at 22–27°C with a pH of 5.0–7.5, providing plants, driftwood and open swimming space. A large, well-structured shoal keeps their energy focused inward rather than on tankmates. They are hardy omnivores that eat flake, pellets and frozen foods enthusiastically. Their reputation as fin-nippers is real: kept in small numbers or with slow, long-finned fish, they harass tankmates, so choose brisk companions and a big group. Their few health issues — ich and fin rot — follow poor water or chilling, both prevented by clean, stable conditions.
