Shetland sheep are one of the Northern European short-tailed breeds, developed on the harsh, windswept Shetland Islands of Scotland where thriftiness was essential to survival. Small and fine-boned, they weigh 34-52 kg, live 10-16 years, and produce soft, colorful fleece in a wide array of natural shades prized by handspinners. These hardy sheep are economical to keep and forage well on modest pasture, but they still need a flock, predator-proof fencing, and basic shelter. Feed grass, hay, and sheep-appropriate minerals without added copper, avoiding overfeeding of grain. Shear annually, ideally before the fleece naturally rises in spring. Routine hoof trimming, deworming, and vigilance for foot rot in wet ground are important, though Shetlands' robust constitution makes them one of the more forgiving breeds for beginners.
