The Tailspot Blenny (Ecsenius stigmatura) comes from the western Pacific and reaches only about 6 cm, making it ideal for smaller systems. It is greyish with an orange-tinted face, fine blue lines around the eyes, and a distinctive dark spot at the tail base. Like its relatives it grazes algae and perches watchfully on the rockwork. A 40-litre (10-gallon) or larger reef tank suits it, with live rock for grazing and hiding, at 24-26C, salinity 1.024-1.026, pH 8.1-8.4. Supplement natural algae with dried nori, spirulina-based foods, and mysis. It is peaceful and fully reef-safe, an excellent nano-tank choice, but keep only one blenny per tank to avoid territorial disputes. A secure lid helps prevent occasional jumps.
