A tarantula is a fascinating, low-maintenance display animal rather than a hands-on pet, and it should be kept alone — they are solitary and will fight. The right setup depends on the species: terrestrial (ground-dwelling) types need a wide enclosure with deep substrate for burrowing, while arboreal (tree-dwelling) species need height and something to anchor silk to. All need a hide, a shallow water dish, and the humidity and temperature their particular species requires, so research the exact species before buying. Feeding is simple — appropriately sized insects such as crickets or roaches every week or two — but never feed a spider that is about to moult. Moulting is the vulnerable heart of a tarantula's life: it flips onto its back and lies still for hours, and must not be disturbed or fed for several days afterward while its new exoskeleton hardens. Handle rarely or not at all. A fall of even a short distance can rupture a tarantula's abdomen and kill it, and New World species flick irritating urticating hairs when threatened. Keep the lid secure, maintain correct humidity to prevent bad moults and dehydration, and a female can quietly reward you with well over a decade — sometimes twenty-five years — of life.
