White's Tree Frog (Litoria caerulea), also called the dumpy tree frog, is a large, stout tree frog from the woodlands of Australia and New Guinea, blue-green to teal with a placid, almost comically sleepy expression. It reaches 7-11 cm, lives 10-16 years, and its calm nature and hardiness make it one of the best first amphibians. Unlike most frogs, White's tolerate gentle, occasional brief handling with clean, wet hands, though like all amphibians they absorb everything through their skin, so hands must be free of soap, lotion and salt. Their placid appetite makes them prone to obesity — a healthy frog is rounded but not so fat that skin folds bulge over the eyes. House a single adult in a tall, planted terrarium of at least 45 cm each way with branches to climb, a large shallow water dish, and warmth around 24-28 C by day with a slight night drop. Feed appropriately sized crickets and roaches dusted with calcium and vitamin D3 to prevent metabolic bone disease, offered a few times a week rather than daily. Use dechlorinated water for the dish and misting, keep humidity moderate to high, and watch for skin infections, bloating and weight, seeing an amphibian-savvy exotics vet when needed.
