The Teddy is an American breed created through a natural genetic mutation that produces a short, kinked, resilient coat standing away from the body. Its fur feels wiry yet plush, and unlike long-haired breeds it needs relatively little grooming. Standard cavy dimensions apply, at 0.7-1.2 kg and a five-to-seven-year lifespan, with a friendly, mellow disposition. Teddies need companions and should be kept in same-sex pairs or groups in a large ground-level cage. Their dense coat can trap bedding debris and tends toward dryness, so a light weekly brush and occasional skin checks keep it healthy; avoid over-bathing, which strips natural oils. Feed the essential cavy diet of unlimited grass hay, a vitamin C-fortified pellet, and daily fresh vegetables. Provide hides, hay, and floor space for foraging and exercise, and handle regularly to maintain their calm, people-oriented nature.
