The Tibetan Mastiff is an ancient, majestic guardian bred to protect Himalayan monasteries and villages, and it is as aloof and independent as the mountains it comes from. Deeply devoted and gentle with its own family but reserved, territorial and naturally suspicious of strangers, it is a serious guardian breed strictly for very experienced owners. It thinks entirely for itself, is not remotely an obedience dog, and needs early, extensive socialisation, seriously secure fencing and patient, respectful training — and even then it will always guard on its own terms, patrolling and barking especially at night. Its exercise needs are surprisingly moderate, but its guarding instincts are not. The enormous double coat, including a heavy mane, sheds once a year in a dramatic 'blow' and needs regular brushing, especially then. As a giant breed the Tibetan Mastiff has a moderate lifespan of ten to twelve years and real risks: buy from a breeder who screens hips and elbows, and be aware of hip and elbow dysplasia, hypothyroidism, entropion (eyelid problems) and a breed-specific inherited neuropathy (CIDN). Give a Tibetan Mastiff experienced handling, thorough socialisation, secure space and respect for its independence, and this ancient monastery guardian will be a devoted, dignified protector for ten to twelve years.
