The Xoloitzcuintli, one of the world's oldest and rarest breeds, is a calm, intelligent and deeply loyal companion that bonds intensely with its family and can be reserved or aloof with strangers. It comes in three sizes and both hairless and coated varieties. Xolos are notably tranquil and attentive for their history as guardians, forming close, almost velcro-like attachments and making devoted, sensitive family dogs that thrive on companionship. This is a moderately active breed that enjoys daily walks and play but is happy to settle calmly indoors, making it adaptable to many homes. Xolos are smart and observant but can be independent, so early socialization and patient, positive training work best; they are sensitive and do not respond well to harshness. They are also known for being quiet, clean and undemanding once their needs are met. Care of the hairless variety centers on the skin: it needs gentle washing, occasional moisturizing and sun protection, while the coated type needs only simple brushing. Their exposed skin can be prone to acne and irritation, and missing teeth are common in hairless dogs. The breed is generally very healthy and long-lived, with dental issues, skin problems, patellar luxation and allergies among the main concerns. Loved and protected from extremes, the Xolo is a serene, devoted companion.
