The Yorkshire Terrier is a tiny dog with an enormous terrier personality — brave, feisty, affectionate and utterly convinced it is far bigger than two or three kilograms. Bred to hunt rats, it retains real courage and a quick mind, and it bonds intensely with its person. Without training and boundaries, that boldness can turn into yappy, snappy 'small dog syndrome', so treat a Yorkie like a real dog: socialise it, train it kindly and consistently, and give it exercise and play rather than just a handbag to ride in. The long silky coat needs daily brushing to stay tangle-free (many owners keep it in a short 'puppy cut' for ease), plus regular dental care. Being so small, the Yorkie is delicate and prone to specific problems: patellar luxation, a collapsing trachea (use a harness, never a neck collar, on walks), Legg-Calvé-Perthes hip disease, dental disease from a crowded mouth, and low blood sugar in tiny puppies. Handle it gently, protect it from rough play and falls, keep up dental care, and a Yorkie will be a bold, devoted little companion for thirteen to sixteen years.
