The zebra finch is a hardy, cheerful little flock bird, and the golden rule is that it must never be kept alone — finches live for the company of their own kind, so keep at least a pair or a small group. They are watch-don't-touch birds, busy and self-entertaining, filling the room with soft beeping chatter all day. Because they fly rather than climb, they need a long horizontal flight cage rather than a tall one, with perches at different levels and space to zip between them. Diet is a good finch seed mix supplemented with fresh greens, egg food and a constant cuttlebone for calcium. That calcium matters especially because zebra finches breed readily and prolifically. That eagerness to breed is the main welfare pitfall: hens can become chronic egg-layers and suffer calcium depletion and fatal egg binding, so unless you intend to breed, remove nests and nesting material. Watch also for respiratory air-sac mites and overgrown beak and nails. Keep their air free of non-stick fumes, aerosols and smoke, provide company, flight space and calcium, and a little flock of zebra finches will thrive for five to nine years.
