The Babydoll Southdown is a miniature heritage sheep, descended from the original small Southdowns of the English South Downs before the breed was scaled up for meat. Standing only about 45-60 cm at the shoulder and weighing 24-34 kg, with a woolly, smiling teddy-bear face, it lives 12-16 years and has become popular as a gentle small-farm and pet sheep, and as a natural, docile lawn-mower in vineyards and orchards. Sheep are flock animals and must never be kept alone; a minimum of two, ideally more, is essential for their mental health. Babydolls are calm, hardy and easy to handle compared with larger breeds, but they are still livestock that need secure fencing, shelter from wet and heat, and protection from predators. Their diet is primarily good-quality pasture and grass hay, with mineral supplementation (and careful attention to copper, which sheep are sensitive to) and only limited grain to prevent obesity and digestive upset. The wool needs shearing once or twice a year, and routine care includes hoof trimming, parasite control and vaccinations guided by a livestock vet. With companions, safe fencing, shearing and basic flock husbandry, Babydolls are among the most manageable and endearing small ruminants.
