The bearded dragon is one of the friendliest, most interactive reptiles, but it is a desert lizard with demanding equipment needs that beginners often underestimate. An adult needs a large enclosure of at least 120 cm, a strong UVB tube running the length of it, and a hot basking spot of 38–43°C with a cooler end — the combination of UVB and heat is what lets a beardie process calcium and digest its food, and getting it wrong leads straight to illness. Diet shifts with age: juveniles eat mostly gut-loaded insects with some greens, while adults eat mostly leafy greens and vegetables with fewer insects, all dusted with calcium. Without proper UVB and calcium, metabolic bone disease sets in; too many fatty insects and too little activity bring obesity. Avoid loose particulate substrate, which can cause impaction, and keep the enclosure warm and dry, since damp, cold conditions cause respiratory infections. Provide a shallow water dish, watch for the signs of impaction, parasites or the contagious atadenovirus, and a well-kept bearded dragon will be a sociable, shoulder-napping companion for ten to fifteen years.
