The Black-capped Lory (Lorius lory) comes from the rainforests of New Guinea and its satellite islands. Lories and lorikeets are the nectar specialists of the parrot world: instead of a crushing seed-eater's tongue they have a brush tip adapted to lapping nectar and pollen from flowers, and their digestive system is built for liquid food. That single fact determines everything about keeping one. A lory must be fed a commercial nectar or lory-specific dry powder plus fresh fruit and vegetables. Seed and standard parrot pellets are not appropriate as a base and cause serious disease over time; iron-storage disease is also a documented risk in lories, so high-iron foods should be avoided and the diet discussed with an avian vet. The practical consequence of a liquid diet is dramatic: lory droppings are projectile and liquid, and the enclosure and surrounding walls need daily cleaning. This is the single most common reason lories are rehomed. In exchange you get one of the most entertaining parrots alive: acrobatic, bouncing, endlessly curious, rolling on its back to play, and a decent talker. It is loud with a piercing call and is not an apartment bird. Provide a large easy-to-clean flight cage, daily bathing opportunities, and constant toys. Keep the air free of non-stick fumes and aerosols, and find an avian vet familiar with lories before you take one on, because the nutritional side of their care is where things go wrong.
