The Border Collie is widely considered the most intelligent dog breed, with a relentless work ethic to match — and that is exactly why it is the wrong dog for most homes. Bred to herd sheep all day, it has near-limitless energy and an intense need to work, and a Border Collie that isn't given a serious daily outlet for both body and mind will invent its own job: obsessively herding children, cars, bikes or the vacuum, spinning, barking or becoming destructive and neurotic. It thrives with active owners who commit to hours of exercise plus training, herding, agility or advanced dog sports. The medium double coat sheds and needs brushing a couple of times a week. Given proper stimulation it is a phenomenally responsive, devoted partner. Health-wise, buy from a breeder who screens hips and eyes: the breed is prone to hip dysplasia, eye conditions (Collie eye anomaly, progressive retinal atrophy), epilepsy and congenital deafness, and it can carry the MDR1 drug-sensitivity gene, so ask about testing. Match a Border Collie only to a home that can truly work its body and brain every day, and it will be an extraordinary companion for twelve to fifteen years.
