The Canaan Dog is Israel's national breed, redomesticated in the twentieth century from the ancient pariah dogs that survived for millennia in the desert — and that natural, un-engineered heritage shows in its hardy health, sharp intelligence and strong survival instincts. Alert, vigilant and territorial, it is a superb watchdog that is naturally suspicious of strangers and other dogs while being deeply devoted to its own family. Independent and quick-thinking rather than eager to please, it needs early, thorough socialisation and patient, positive, consistent training to become the confident, discerning companion it should be, not a fearful or reactive one. It has moderate energy and needs daily exercise and mental engagement. The short-to-medium double coat is easy, needing only weekly brushing, more during seasonal moults. Health is a genuine bright spot: as a natural breed with a broad gene pool, the Canaan Dog is one of the healthiest dogs around, with relatively few inherited problems — though good breeders still screen for hip dysplasia and eye and thyroid conditions, and patellar luxation and epilepsy occur occasionally. Give a Canaan Dog early socialisation, consistent training, exercise and a clear role, and this vigilant, healthy survivor will be a devoted companion for twelve to fifteen years.
