The Brussels Griffon is a tiny, bearded companion with an almost-human, endearingly worried expression and a personality far bigger than its body. Sensitive, alert and intensely devoted, it typically bonds hard to one person and wants to supervise them constantly, ideally from shoulder height, and it does not cope well with being left alone. Bright but a little stubborn and quite sensitive, it needs gentle, patient, positive training and calm handling; it is a poor match for rough young children but a wonderful, affectionate shadow for an attentive owner. Coat care depends on type: the rough coat needs regular brushing and hand-stripping, the smooth coat only a weekly brush. Health-wise, the Brussels Griffon is a brachycephalic (flat-faced) breed, so it can be heat-intolerant and breathe hard — keep it cool and avoid over-exertion — and its prominent eyes are prone to injury. Also buy from a breeder who screens, and watch for patellar luxation, hip dysplasia, cataracts, and dental disease in its small mouth. Keep it cool, protect its eyes, keep up dental care and companionship, and this charming little gremlin will be a devoted companion for twelve to fifteen years.
