The Chihuahua is the world's smallest dog with one of its biggest personalities: brave, alert, devoted and utterly convinced of its own importance. It typically picks one favourite human and bonds intensely, guarding them against all comers real or imagined. That boldness makes early socialisation and kind, consistent training essential — an unsocialised Chihuahua can become snappy and over-protective, the classic 'small dog syndrome', which is a training failure, not a fixed trait. Its exercise needs are modest, so it fits apartment life well, but it still needs walks, play and mental engagement. Coat care depends on type: the smooth coat needs only a weekly brush, the long coat a bit more. Being so tiny, the Chihuahua is fragile — it must be protected from falls, rough handling and larger dogs — and it feels the cold, appreciating a coat in winter. Health-wise, watch for dental disease (crucial in such a small mouth), patellar luxation, heart disease (mitral valve), a collapsing trachea (use a harness), and, in some, a soft spot on the skull (open fontanelle). Keep up dental care, handle it gently and train it like a real dog, and a Chihuahua will be a bold, devoted companion for fourteen to sixteen years or more.
