Chinchillas come from the cold, high Andes of Chile, and their extraordinary fur — up to 80 hairs from a single follicle, the densest of any land mammal — is an adaptation to alpine cold that makes them exquisitely sensitive to heat. Above about 25°C they risk fatal heatstroke, so a cool, climate-controlled room is non-negotiable. With good care they live an astonishing 10–20 years, so this is a decade-plus commitment. House them tall: a multi-level cage with solid metal or wood ledges (not plastic, which they will eat) for the leaping and wall-bouncing they do at dusk and dawn. Never bathe a chinchilla in water — the dense coat cannot dry and will rot; instead give a dust bath of special chinchilla dust a few times a week for 10–15 minutes. The digestive system is built for dry, high-fibre roughage: unlimited grass hay is the foundation, with a small measured plain chinchilla pellet and almost no treats — fatty seeds and sugary fruit cause serious problems. Their teeth grow continuously and malocclusion is the leading health issue, so provide constant safe chews and watch for drooling or dropped weight. Keep handling gentle: a frightened chinchilla releases a patch of fur ("fur slip") to escape.
