The Black-tailed Prairie Dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) is not a canine but a stout, burrowing ground squirrel from the grasslands of North America, where it lives in huge cooperative colonies called towns and communicates with a complex system of barks and calls. Pets weigh 0.7-1.5 kg and live around 5-8 years. Prairie dogs are exotic pets that suit only very committed keepers, and their care and even legality varies by region, so check local rules first. They are profoundly social and, if kept singly, bond intensely to their owner and need enormous amounts of attention; a lonely, under-stimulated prairie dog becomes stressed and can turn nippy, especially during the hormonal 'rut' season. House them in a large multi-level enclosure with deep bedding for burrowing, since digging is a core need, and daily out-time in a rodent-proofed space. Feed a high-fibre diet based on grass hay and a formulated prairie dog or low-protein rodent pellet, with fresh vegetables and very limited treats to prevent obesity. Find an exotics vet before you adopt, and be realistic: this is a loud, digging, deeply social animal that needs years of dedicated time.
