The African pygmy hedgehog is a captive-bred hybrid of two African species, not a wild animal, and it is a solitary, nocturnal insectivore covered in about 5,000 spines. When it meets a new smell it performs "self-anointing" — twisting to spread frothy saliva over its spines — a normal, if bizarre, behaviour. Adults weigh 300–600 g and live 4–6 years, and they live alone: hedgehogs do not want a cage-mate. Warmth is the critical, often-missed need: below about 20–22°C a pygmy hedgehog may attempt hibernation, which is dangerous and can be fatal in captivity, so a thermostatically controlled heat source keeping 24–27°C is essential. House one in a large solid-bottom enclosure with a big solid wheel (they run several kilometres a night), a hide, and dust-free paper or fleece bedding. Diet reflects the insectivore gut: a high-protein, low-fat base — good-quality cat kibble or a specialist hedgehog food — plus insects such as mealworms and crickets as treats and enrichment; obesity is common and serious. Health watch-list: obesity, dental disease, mites and dry skin, and "Wobbly Hedgehog Syndrome," a progressive neurological disease. Handle patiently and often when young so the spines relax; a content hedgehog flattens rather than balls up.
