The Dusky-headed Conure (Aratinga weddellii) lives in the western Amazon basin across Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia and Brazil. At 90 to 120 grams it is a small Aratinga, and it has an unusual reputation within its noisy genus: it is the quiet one. It still calls, but at a volume and frequency that many owners describe as comparable to a cockatiel, which is why it is regularly recommended to people who want conure personality without conure decibels. The rest of the package is classic conure. Duskies are playful, gentle, cuddly and love to burrow into pockets and sleeves. They are less nippy than most of the genus and adapt well to children and to busy households, and they are generally good with other birds rather than territorial. They are not strong talkers; a handful of words at most. Like all conures they hate solitude and do best either in a pair or with a household that is genuinely home. Care is straightforward: a wide flight cage, daily out-of-cage time, and constant foraging and shredding material. Feed a formulated pellet base with fresh vegetables and dark leafy greens, with fruit as an occasional treat and seed as a training reward rather than a meal. The health risks that actually occur are diet-driven obesity and fatty liver, boredom-driven feather plucking, and chronic egg laying in hens exposed to long light hours and nesting spots. Manage those three and add a yearly avian check-up, and this is an easy bird to live with for two decades.
