The Harrier is a cheerful, hardy pack scent hound — often described as a 'Beagle on steroids', sitting between the Beagle and the Foxhound in size — bred to hunt hare in a group. Friendly, sociable and outgoing, it is good-natured with people and especially with other dogs, making a fun family companion for an active, outdoorsy household. As a pack and scent hound it has real stamina and an ever-active nose, so it needs a great deal of daily exercise, a securely fenced yard and on-lead walks (recall is unreliable once on a trail), plus patient, positive, food-motivated training. It is somewhat stubborn and independent, dislikes being left alone, and will bay — so it thrives with company and a job for its nose. The short coat is very easy, needing only a weekly brush, with regular cleaning of the drop ears. Health-wise the Harrier is a hardy, healthy breed with relatively few problems, but buy from a reputable breeder and watch for hip dysplasia, ear infections, a tendency to obesity, and hypothyroidism. Give a Harrier serious daily exercise, scent work, secure containment, company and portion control, keep the ears clean, and this jolly pack athlete will be a devoted companion for twelve to fifteen years.
