The Norwegian Elkhound is an ancient, hardy Nordic spitz that tracked and held moose for Viking hunters for thousands of years, and it remains a robust, weatherproof, boldly independent dog devoted to its whole family. Confident, alert and friendly, it makes a good family companion and watchdog, but two traits define daily life: it is a natural, enthusiastic barker, and it is independent and strong-willed, so it needs early socialisation and patient, positive, motivating training rather than expecting instant obedience. Bred to work all day in cold forests, it has real stamina and needs plenty of daily exercise and mental engagement. The thick grey double coat sheds heavily and 'blows' seasonally, needing frequent brushing, and the breed strongly prefers cool climates and puts on weight easily, so watch the diet. Health-wise, buy from a breeder who screens hips and eyes, and be aware of the breed's tendencies: hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, hypothyroidism, and inherited kidney disease (renal dysplasia). Guard against obesity, give an Elkhound serious exercise, patient training and a cool environment, keep up preventive care, and this sturdy Viking hound will be a devoted companion for twelve to fifteen years.
