Bred down over generations to under about 86 cm at the withers, the Miniature Horse is a true horse in miniature — not a pony in type — with the same proportions, intelligence and personality in a dog-sized package. Gentle, curious and highly people-oriented, minis are kept as companions, driven in tiny harnesses, shown in-hand, and even trained as assistance and therapy animals thanks to their calm temperament and long lifespan. They cannot be ridden by anyone but the smallest child, so their 'work' is groundwork, driving, obstacle courses and companionship — all of which they take to happily with positive, consistent training. Being clever and food-motivated, they learn tricks fast but can also learn to nip or barge if allowed, so clear, kind boundaries matter. Despite their size they are horses through and through and need equine care: a companion (horses are herd animals), shelter, farrier visits and dental floating. Their biggest health risks come from their tiny frame and big appetite — they are extremely prone to obesity, laminitis and dental crowding, and to hyperlipemia if a fat mini stops eating, so precise weight management and a forage-based diet are critical. With good care, miniatures routinely live into their thirties.
